- Instructions for using A.P.D.L. !Order program
- ================================================
-
-
- This program is intended to make it easy for you to order discs and most
- other items from APDL.
-
- !Order lets you browse at leisure through the files which make up the
- catalogue and then (or simultaneously) use !Order to make up your order.
- Unlike the programs used by certain other libraries !Order is fast. You
- don't have to wait ages for it to install itself (it takes about ten
- seconds on an A5000 - but then it's a very big catalogue!) and it
- doesn't need to access the disc again once it's running so you can
- remove the disc with the program on it from the drive if you wish. You
- can also stop after making part of your selection and continue later.
-
- As the program descriptions don't form part of the !Order program it
- takes only about 200K when running. Even on a 1Mb machine you should
- therefore be able to cover the entire catalogue while browsing through
- the descriptive text with your editor.
-
- IMPORTANT - Although the program takes account of the reduction in Bonus
- discs for overseas customers and the standard £1 surcharge it does NOT
- take account of extra postage for non UK customers on some items such as
- !FasterPC, books, etc. If you have ordered anything other than 'normal'
- discs from outside the UK please check the catalogue and include any
- extra postage - don't rely on the !Order program to do it for you.
-
- Using !Order
- ------------
- Basically all you need to do is load the !Order application. A window
- will open with icons showing you how many items you have ordered
- (obviously nothing yet), the total cost, total Bonus points accumulated
- and Bonus points unused. If you close this window at any time then
- clicking SELECT on the Order icon will reopen it.
-
- At the top of the main window are four icons marked U.K., Europe, Other
- and Invoice. U.K. will be selected by default but if you do live
- elsewhere please click on the correct button and this will set the
- number of points needed for Bonus discs and any other differences. If
- you are NOT sending payment with your order then, unless we have
- previously agreed to the contrary, you must select 'Invoice' because you
- won't be entitled to any bonus discs and there is a minimum order charge
- of £5 which will appear as soon as 'Invoice' is selected.
-
- Below this are a series of large 'buttons', each corresponding to a
- section of the catalogue. You may find that you will need to scroll
- the window to see those at the bottom. If you click on one of these a
- window will open with a list of the disc numbers in that section. Just
- click on a disc to select it. As you do so you will see the icons in the
- top of the main window alter. If you change your mind just click on the
- item again and it will be de-selected.
-
- Most of these windows are long and thin and show the disc numbers with,
- perhaps, variations available. The windows for individual programs,
- tracker tunes, etc. are wider and the items are shown four across the
- window with the price in pence after each item. Whichever shape of
- window is used operation is the same.
-
- You will see that the disc numbers are different colours. 'ordinary'
- discs priced at £1.50 are dark grey, 800K multi-discs sets are dark
- green, hi density 1.6Mb discs are dark blue, and multi disc 1.6Mb sets
- are red. If an item does not cost £1.50 its price will be shown.
-
- You will see the Bonus points accumulating as you select discs. If you
- have enough points then the next time you click on a standard (ie. dark
- grey) disc instead of the 'Total cost' increasing your Bonus points will
- be 'used up' instead. Bonus points can only be used for standard discs.
-
- Individual programs and Tracker tunes
- -------------------------------------
- The method used to select these is the same as for normal discs, just
- open the window and click on the ones you want.
-
- Before you begin, if you want them on hi density (1.6Mb) disc(s) select
- the 'Individual on HD' icon in the main window. If you don't do this
- you'll get them on 800K discs.
-
- When you select your first individual item the 'Total cost' will
- increase by the minimum charge for individual items. As you select more
- items the price won't increase until you exceed this minimum charge.
-
-
- Name and Address
- ----------------
- If you click MENU on the main window a menu will appear. The items on
- this are -
-
- Address
- Print order
- Page length
- Recalculate
- Clear selec
- Save order
- Save text
-
- If you click on Address a window will open in which you can enter your
- name and address. You can also get to this window from the icon bar menu
-
- If you want to order by Credit Card then you should enter your card
- number and expiry date in the Address Window. If you do this you MUST
- sign your printed order or, if you send your order on disc, you should
- include a short, SIGNED, note authorising us to debit your card.
-
- Recalculate will completely recalculate the cost of your order, taking
- into account all Bonus points and using them in the most advantageous
- way against standard discs. You shouldn't need to do this but you may
- wish to if, for example, you have selected all the standard discs you
- require and still want other items which will give you Bonus points.
-
- Clear selec(tion) will completely wipe out everything you have chosen.
-
- Print order will send your order to the printer. The printing isn't
- particularly fancy and is really intended for a dot matrix or other
- simple printer. If you want a 'fancy' output there is an alternative.
-
- Page length allows you to set the number of lines on each page. By
- default this is set to '66', the number of lines on 11 inch fanfold
- paper (assuming your printer is set to the standard 6 lines per inch).
- For A4 paper change this to 70, or for 12 inch change it to 72. A 'form
- feed' command is sent at the end of each page and at the end of
- printing, so if you are using fanfold paper you must have your printer
- set to the correct form length for fanfold paper or the pages will get
- 'out of step' with the perforations.
-
- If you put the mouse pointer on 'Save text' and slide it to the right a
- 'Save' window will appear. Just drag the icon in this to a suitable
- directory viewer and your selection will be saved as a plain text file.
- As this is almost identical to the way your order will be printed it is
- probably a good idea to do this and load it into !Edit to check before
- printing to check that you haven't forgotten anything.
-
- Before your order is printed or saved as a text file a window will open
- showing the name and address you have entered (or blank if you have
- forgotten to enter it). If all is correct click on 'OK', if you have
- forgotten your name and address or it is incorrect click on 'Cancel' and
- you can then open the 'Address' window and correct it.
-
- If you want to add anything to your selection such as blank discs,
- PC 'ZIP' files, or anything else that we supply that isn't available
- from the !Order program you can save your order as a text file and
- then use !Edit to add these before you print the file using the standard
- printer drivers.
-
- You could also load the text file into a wordprocessor or DTP program if
- you wish to make it more exotic.
-
- As well as saving your order as a text file 'Save order' will save it in
- a form which can be reloaded into !Order. You can do this if you want to
- stop before you have completed your order and continue later. In fact
- you can't actually reload a file into !Order while it's running, you
- must double-click on the order file and !Order will start up with your
- order loaded.
-
-
- Printing
- --------
- The printing method used by !Order is very simple. It doesn't use the
- RiscOS Printer Drivers but sends text directly to the printer. This
- method was chosen for speed and simplicity and so people who only have
- a simple dot matrix printer don't have to wait ages for hardcopy. This
- might mean your order is a bit 'plain' but if you do want to make it
- more 'pretty' you can always load the text into a DTP package and do so.
-
- There are a couple of problems which can appear when this method is used
- if your printer and/or computer aren't configured properly. These may
- not appear if you normally use Printer Drivers but they will show up if
- 'direct' printing is used and should be corrected or you may have
- problems with other programs.
-
- The most likely problem is that all text is double-spaced with a blank
- line between each line of text. This is caused by your printer being
- incorrectly configured. You must set the printer to 'Line feeds from
- host'. This is usually done by setting a DIL switch somewhere on the
- printer and you will have to refer to the printer's manual to find out
- how to do this. If you really can't work out how to do this (or don't
- want to for some other reason) then click on 'Linefeed' on the main
- menu so that it isn't 'ticked'. Linefeeds will NOT then be sent to the
- printer at the end of each line to make sure that it is not double
- spaced. Alternatively if you hold down the right hand ALT and the LEFT
- ARROW keys (both together) when you double-click on !Order to start the
- program then no line feeds will be sent. If you do this and your printer
- is correctly configured then everything will be printed on one line.
-
- If you do choose to use fancy fonts to print your order PLEASE be
- careful which styles you choose. People often send me beautifully printed
- orders but have used fonts which are completely unsuitable for printing
- disc code numbers. It might not look so nice but a plain, simple, font
- makes your order easy to read and is less likely to lead to mistakes.
- For the same reason please don't use anything too fancy for your
- address. Sometimes people put there name and address in beautiful italic
- script which makes the postcode impossible to read!
-
- You may notice that when an order is printed your name and address
- appears at the bottom as well as at the top. The reason for the
- duplication is that I cut out the second one and use it as a return
- label to eliminate the possibility of mistakes.
-
-
- Limitations
- -----------
- At present you cannot use !Order to select PC 'ZIP' files etc. At some
- time I might extend it to incorporate these but for the present you will
- have to use !Order for 'normal' discs and then include a separate sheet
- for these or add them to the 'Text' output file from !Order
-
- If you send your order on disc (I suggest putting it on your catalogue
- disc which I can then update and return to you) please don't just
- put the disc in a normal envelope. Use a 'jiffy' bag or some other
- protective packaging. Please also include your name and address on a
- sheet of paper as well as on the disc. Sometimes discs get damaged in
- the post and if this happens then I will be able to tell you. If I can't
- read the disc for any reason and you haven't included your name and
- address elsewhere then there's not much I can do, so you will wait
- forever for your order unjustly blaming APDL or the Post Office.
-
- Don't just write it on the back of the envelope. By the time I look at
- the disc I will probably have a pile of empty envelopes and it may not
- be possible to work out which your disc came in.
-
-
- Problems
- --------
- !Order has been the subject of extremely rapid development since it's
- introduction in June '94. The first version was written in less than
- three days and was amazingly bug free. However it did have quite a few
- shortcomings and so in the following two months it was updated every few
- days whenever I had a bit of spare time. It was made faster, Individual
- programs and Tracker tunes were added, the companion !PCorder and
- !GIForder programs were written and it was made possible to amalgamate
- the output from these with the 'main' !Order program. Because of this
- quick development (often a rewrite was undertaken before 8am. when the
- post arrives and the new version went out with the catalogue requests!)
- it isn't surprising that a few 'glitches' appeared. As all programmers
- will tell you a 'bug fix' quite often fixes the bug and then creates a
- new one! If you 'experienced' one of these versions please accept my
- apologies, and many thanks to those who, despite the bugs, made nice
- comments about the programs and told me what didn't work properly. It's
- thanks to your reports that it's gradually being put right and improved.
